My SD Boy Doll Journey

Published February 5, 2016 by makeuponatightbudget

I say journey because it’s definitely felt like one. It all started with following a few doll collectors and people in the BJD hobby on Instagram. One of them was selling a Little Rebel Seven head for around $190-ish. I don’t know why I wanted to buy this floating head but one thing lead to another and I put my first layaway on a doll (she was gracious enough to do a layaway with me). Now I know there are people who buy heads with the intent of getting bodies for them eventually. I don’t like eventuallys, If I was going to get a head I was also going to get a boy body. She recommended an Fdoll V2 body, which is available on The skin tone I needed however was out of stock. So I got one that I thought would be the next best thing, which was pink (the head is Light Normal). I was impatient and didn’t want to wait for the Light Normal body to be in stock, so I went ahead with the Pink body and put it on layaway. I had two layaways and about $400 or so dollars to pay off. It was fairly easy as the payments weren’t synced up and there was enough time apart where I wouldn’t get slammed with 2 payments at once.

The head did come first, I never got a picture of the original faceup. It was good, better than what I could do, a little bit too heavy black shadow around the eyes and not too much details. I decided to look into doing my second faceup, my first full face up (the first attempt was building off the original faceup of my Mystic Kids Natalia, adding eyeshadows and lipstick basically). After purchasing some essentials for faceup removal on VOLKS USA website, i scrubbed him clean.

I had seen a lot of people with fem boy dolls. I had seen so much of it that I really began to hate the idea. It’s really not my cup of tea. I decided that my doll was going to be manly. I wanted to give him a bit of a hipster style too. So I added a beard.

A frontal view

Eventually I think I’ll redo the eyes but it do like most of the faceup. I think the harsh edges on the eye shading is whats bother me. And i’d like it to be a bit more realistic. Other than that I love the beard and his little beauty mark ūüôā So the head was done, time to pay off the body.

I got the body January 2016 a few days after my last payment. The head is more yellow than the body (naturally with the resin color not really due to yellowing). So the resin doesn’t match but there’s hardly a difference. You can see in the picture that for the most part the resins match it’s just a matter of the undertones, one is pink and the other is yellow. But i figured with wearing clothes, you wouldn’t really be able to tell.

So i had the body, I had the head, did the faceup, now it was time for clothes and mods. This doll was going to be my experiment doll. I wanted to put piercings and tattoos on him. As you can see , he already has a nose ring a lip piercing. I had some earrings on him but they kept falling off. I’ve also created gauges for him but I haven’t gotten around to putting them on him yet. I did get all his tattoos done. He has a sleeve, a chest piece, one on the back of his neck, back, thighs, and ankles.

The piercings were done by cutting a jump ring in half with some nail clippers, taking the shape in a bit by squeezing the ends closer together and to create a more rounded shape. Then I used tacky glue to stick it on. For the tattoos, I used printable tattoo paper that I got at JoAnn Fabrics. Each pack only comes with one sheet, but when you think about the size of your doll compared to a human, one sheet is all you need. I fit a lot of the tattoos I wanted on a single sheet. You simply find the image you want, print it, add a layer of sealant to the area when the tattoo is going to be on your doll, apply the tattoo with water as you normally would, then add a final layer of sealant. Apply the tattoos away from joints as the tattoos will gunk them up. You also want to make sure that water doesn’t fall into the joints and get on the string used to keep the body together. Apply the tattoo with circular motions as well as up and down strokes. Sometimes air bubbles can appear, so trying to smooth everything out before hand will help to prevent that. I had a few air bubble myself and had to reprint and reapply the tattoo again.

He has a horror movie themed sleeve

After a while and not really having money to buy him clothes (i’m really bad at making clothes myself) I went to Ohayocon. There were a few people I was able to buy some clothes from, so he’s finally clothed! Here is just one of his outfits.

Later on I was able to get him some other stuff online.

The next battle was the wig. I got a wig on ebay for $12. It had a few layers of split pink and blue hair then the rest was an auburn-ish color. I first cut the pink and blue layer down to the length I wanted then the auburn I tried leaving longer. I’m no hairstylist. I usually hack my way through a wig even though I try to go layer by layer, none of it turns out even or looks right. Like I said, the hair wouldn’t hold for a bun in a hair tie so I cut it shorter. Eventually I kept cutting and cutting until I got the hair you see on the doll. It looks alright with the beanie on but if you take it off the wig just looks like a mess (because it is). I don’t know what really possessed me to buy this wig. I think it was probably because I was looking for something cheap that I could get easy. I had good intentions for it but in the end I ended up hating it. I have now ordered a black fur wig which i hope is easier to style and not really have bangs. I think the wig he has on now makes him look too feminine, especially with the color, bangs, and style. It also doesn’t match his facial hair so that’s a problem.

Overall he needs more clothes. He needs basic and non patterned pants and a few non patterned t shirts. All his pants are checkered patterns and all his tshirts are stripped, i don’t know how that happened. He does have a white shirt and plain grey cardigan though. I would just need to get some jeans or black (non harem style) pants.

As for poseablility, he can’t stand on his own and his body flops around all over the place. It’s so frustrating. And somehow his ass always pops out more than needed and it makes him look like he has scoliosis. It’s difficult to stand him up on his own and do things but sitting poses are ok. He can slouch as well. The arms don’t stay in more natural poses either. They snap back into a place that’s comfortable for them, which is frustrating for me. I really hate it. I don’t think I’d get and FDoll boy body again. I might try to get floating bodies from different companies and hope that it works better. My other doll can stand on her own more. I’ve thought about sueding the joints but I don’t know how to do that and I’m too afraid I’ll mess something up. I might do it eventually.

I don’t think that SD’s are my doll size of choice. I think they’re too big and clunky. I see a lot more clothes for MSD and MNF, and I really like my MSD doll more. I think I might sell the boy doll one day but as for now I do like him and he is really cute. I think once I get everything situated with him he will appeal to me a bit more. I think i’d feel guilty for selling him though. Right now he’s kind of just boy with normal boy fashion. And Luna is like kawaii, lolita, pastel fashion which I think can offer me more creativity. I still do want a badass boy character though. He’s like dark, mysterious, a giant nerd. It’s perfect. AS you can see I’m on the fence about it haha. I do love him though and can imagine myself cuddling this chunk of plastic and going to bed. Plus putting Luna beside him makes him look like a big brother and that’s cute too. I think I can punk up his style too.

Sighs….I’m a hot mess, just like him.

Monster High Doll: Isi Dawndancer Review

Published January 2, 2016 by makeuponatightbudget

Let me start by saying that for me it’s really difficult to find the new dolls as soon as they come out. I’ve been an avid collector of ¬†Monster High since they came out, I even have an OG Frankie and Ghoulia (whom were my favorite at the time). Of course there are still a ton of dolls I do not have that are on my list to get but Isi came out at a time when I suddenly got obsessed with deer. That’s right, deer. And it started with Fawtine Fallowheart who is part of the frightmare collection of mini centaur like dolls. I fell in love with Fawtine because of her gentle design and she looked the most down to earth compared to the other frightmares. And all the other frightmares look mighty bitchy in their design art ūüėõ She was just so cute and only $10 so I got her. Then I started painting my small Obitsu doll into a deer design. And then I saw Isi.

I loved her as soon as I saw her (I love Batsy Claro too and she’s next on my list). This is Monster High’s second Mexican doll, Skelita being the first and representing Day of the Dead, and Isi is “Boo Hexican”, which based on her design, I would assume would be like a Native Aztec spirit. I was able to find her on Amazon, i think through the official Mattel since she was still only $20. I told my mom about her and it was like an early Christmas gift. I normally have to tell my mom and aunt which dolls I don’t have so they don’t buy me dolls I already have. It’s a hassle but this is what I go though, haha.

Anyway, Isi I literally everything. I love her so much. Her face design is of course different from the other dolls because she has the deer facial features. Her nose is the cutest and her eyes are super big. The lines around the outside of her irises are a little uneven but you cant really tell unless you look real close, factory errors happen all the time. She also doesn’t have antlers, which I’m assuming is because she’s a female deer. The antlers however are represented in her headband. I would eventually like to see a doll with ¬†antlers (a normal doll, because Fawntine has Antlers).

Her outfit is a one piece jumpsuit, a overlaying poncho, calf high heels, and a yellow beaded necklace. Her purse is a large circle bag with a dreamcatcher design.

I love the jumpsuit design which is a halter top one piece. It’s a combination of aztec print with a little monster high skull design. That’s my favorite part of the design. The poncho seems to be more of a traditional Aztec design (that I know of) and it stands out because of her blue hair, bag, and heels. Her hair is so soft, btw!!

Love the little Monster High Skull!

Yes, her feet are hooves

I can’t tell you how much I love this doll. She I think is hands down one of my favorites, maybe even more so than Abbey, Rochelle, and Robecca. I can’t wait to see how Isi is in the movie (hopefully they’ll make a movie, I think they have one already though). Abbey really spoke to me after I watched a few of the Monster High episodes on Youtube so I’m hoping Isi is the same.

MonstroDesigns-An Etsy Review

Published November 15, 2015 by makeuponatightbudget

My first BJD clothes review! I’ve been on a horrible shopping spree for my doll. I only say horrible because BJD clothes aren’t cheap. I have tried sewing my own clothes and nothing ever turns out right. I can only make my own accessories. But anyway one of the shops I brought some clothes from was MonstroDesigns¬†on Etsy. MonstroDesigns is run by Kay Davis. She makes a ton of wigs, clothes, and accessories for a variety of size dolls including Monster High, MSD/MNF, SD, and Blythe.

I kind of have a hard time finding clothes for Natty since she’s MSD size. This happens mostly on Etsy since a lot of Etsy designers have MNF’s. But luckily all the clothes still fit Natty! and she looks super cute in them.

For this purchase I got a grey slouch beanie, purple bat print skater skirt (which might be out of stock or discontinued as I do not see it on the shop pages), white pencil skirt, white cross print leggings, and the black graveyard print leggings.

AS far as shipping time goes, usually BJD designers take about 1-2 weeks to actually make the clothes, most of them are in a “pre-order status” and state it on the listing. Mine however took around 4 weeks to get shipped and delivered. Kay does live in the U.S (Calirfornia) so it really shouldn’t have taken that long. While I wasn’t happy with the sipping time it wasn’t Kay’s fault at all. She was having some terrible allergy¬†issues and her eyes were swollen shut. She even had to send out mass messages to her customers about it. So it was something that couldn’t be helped.

Nonetheless when my items arrived I was mostly¬†happy. The quality of the sewing is great; all items are machine sewed. The leggings stretch really well. The skirt sits nicely at Natty’s waist and is like a basic circle skirt. I like to pair it with a black petticoat underneath to really fill it out. I think it makes the shape look better as well as keeps with Natty’s style. The beanie has a bit of stretch and flexibility, enough to get it over the head and have it stay in place over a wig. The white pencil skirt was EXTREMELY seethrough. I had to put white underwear on underneath to make it a bit opaque and even then i was a struggle to try and get the underwear smooth underneath the skirt.

The cross leggings were a bit of disappointment as  the cross pattern stretched too much and began to crack.

This didn’t happen at all with the graveyard pattern and I asusme they were put onto the fabric in the same was. The Beanie also looks great with her new wig.

She a glamour gurl #bjd #abjd #balljointeddoll #mystickids #natalia

Here is the outfit I created using the bat print skirt, graveyard leggings, and beanie from kay as well as a halter top and cameo choker I made myself. The boots are from ebay.

Overall i would give my order a 4/5, taking down points for the two white items. I would ¬†order from Kay again and I’ve in fact put in an order for 2 suspender skirts because she had the cutest fabric available. Perhaps I just wont order things that require too much stretching since the other items were fine. Maybe I also wont order white fabrics either. I still think that overall it was a good purchase.

Natty’s style is a mix of sweet/goth lolita and pastel goth. It switches and smushes together from time to time depending on what I find online. Shopping for your doll is hard! I’ve barely gotten clothes for myself ever since I got her!

Sailor Moon Everyday Life Re-Ment Opening and Review

Published August 6, 2015 by makeuponatightbudget

So my preorder payment couldn’t have kicked in at a worse time but I got my box of Sailor Moon rements. I love rements, I’ve been collecting them ever since I got into rilakkuma. I don’t have many of them because to get to America rements are about 7-15 dollars, while in Japan they cost like $3, which sucks for us. I love cute tiny things so this just kind of took the cake for me and I preordered it in the heat of the moment. This is a bunch of stuff I don’t need but dammit if it isn’t cute. There are usually 8 rements to a set which is what I got. Each rement celebrates the lives of the 5 main sailor scouts, tuxedo mask, and luna and artemis. Ok I probably got this just so I could have miniature versions of their wands. The SM wands have always been my favorite things and I even had one when I was a kid. I have 4 gashopon transformation compacts and a wand. Rement are usually sold as blind boxes so even though I know I have the entire set I have no idea which ones goes first. So it will be an extra surprise.

Front and Back of the boxes

Oke first one opened and IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT. GOD THESE ARE SO CUTE!!!

First is¬†Usagi’s and I have to say I love love love this one. The first thing is Usagi’s school bag which ¬†has a cute charm on it. The charm is of her bow with the transformation brooch on it. As before with the wand the brooch has some detailing but it isn’t that great. Might be too hard to do on such a small surface. The bag itself does not open. Second thing is a Mini luna!! The paint job could’ve been a little better on her but otherwise she looked adorable. Next is the piece of Usagi toast that has a little bite taken out of it. The bunny iself is printed a little crooked on the bread but the texture and shading of it is very nice. Then there’s a magazine of some sort that has Sailor moon on it. I think this could’ve been better used for something else. Like instead of the magazine her actual compact or another food item, her handkerchief. It just doesn’t seem to connect with Usagi that much. Last is the transformation pen which i think looks better then the other transformation wands. Probably because it’s design is very simple and doesn’t need all the extra fine detailing. The paper has a screenshot of the rankings for the Sailor V video game I give this one a 4/5.PhotoGrid_1438822643450

Second one¬†I opened ¬†was Mercury’s which is number two in the set. it comes with two books and a band to hold them, the transformation wand, a pen, three cookies and a pencil case. The two books are a Science textbook and an English dictionary. You stack both books together(dictionary on top) then put the blue band around it which has mercury’s symbol. The transformation wand is definitely bigger then I expected but not as detailed which sucks. They’re a little on the plain side. The pen is cute and has a little blue bow on it. The cookies are adorable. I really love them. They even have a bit of texture on the back. My favorite thing is the Mercury symbol on the oval like cookie because it really does look like imperfect icing. The detail and artwork on the pencil case is gorgeous. It’s so beautiful but the hinges are too loose so the top just flaps open and the only thing that can fit in there length wise is the pencil, however the small bow on the pencil prevents it from closing all the way. This is stupid since you think the pencil case would fit the damn pen. On the paper that comes with the package there are two cutouts of notebooks you can make for her:) I give this one a 3.5/5

Now It’s time for Mars! I like this one too because it’s very reflective of her life as a Shinto priestess. The bad thing is I’m not entirely sure what all this stuff is haha. First is an arrow that has small bells on it. There the transformation wand which is similar to Mercury’s. Then there is a stick of dango. These items are so small that it’s difficult for my phone to zoom in on them properly which is annoying me. It hard for me to pick up any details Next is a small wallet that has Rei’s photo ID inside. There’s a small red bow on the outside of the brown wallet. You can pinch the wallet closed but it’s meant to stay open, the plastic is just bendable. There’s a small wooden talisman that has a Mars symbol painted in. it could be like one of the good luck charms they sell at the shrine. Theres a strip of accordion folded paper that has a little sticky tab on the back. You insert the paper into this small booklet. I’m not sure what it’s for though. Last it a paper bag that you assemble which leads me to believe that perhaps this was based on Rei’s life during festival time? Like a combination of school and festival time at the shrine. The bag was a little bit of a pain to assemble. I would suggest creasing all the edges before you fold it to make things easier. The paper has a few extra talismans that Rei uses, especially the paper talisman’s where she sayd “Evil spirits, disperse!” as per the english dub.

Next is Makoto. I like hers because it’s food related! Jupiter is my absolute favorite Sailor scout. I’ve always liked her because she was tough yet gentle, strong, smart, a little goofy and loved to eat. Her set has a cute little benton box that comes with rice balls, tamago and and octopus shaped mini dog. There’s the bento box, a rose designed thermos(the cap does come off), a decorative case for the fork(I’m upset that chopsticks didn’t come with it. usually a case has a spoon, fork, and chopsticks). I arranged the bento as best as I could. The top of the box has a rose design but it’s the same pink color as the rest of the box so it doesnt really stand out. I wish It was painted red and green for the leaves. The case has the same design only smaller and it’s painted a darker pink which really helps. They should’ve tied that in together more. The transformation wand is ok as well. The bonus material on the paper is like a printed napkin/possibly the cloth or bag that you usually tie around your bento but the paper is probably too small too be wrapped around the bento box. It could also just be a napkin of sorts. There is also a printed notebook design. Overall I would give this a 3/5 because while cooking is one of Makoto’s main passions she also likes a lot of other things. I think a combination of her hobbies would’ve been best. Kind of like how Rei’s was.

Next is Venus. I really like this one but also its the exact same as Usagi’s. A bag, Artemis, a magazine, transformation pen, a food item. Not at all creative though I do like the bag more. The design is more appealing i suppose but honestly this one is boring because it’s the same thing. Even the bonus paper has the same screenshot of the Sailor V video game. The only extra thing is a crepe paper to go around the crepe. 2.5/5.

Ok Rini’s has got to be my favorite. It is just absolutely too adorable. You have the Luna P ball which is the best looking transformation item of the bunch, a bunny plushie, a lollipop, the time key, a small pink bag, and a locket that opens. The best part is that the extras on the paper has a picture of Usagi and Mamoru to put in the locket!!! I died. This one is jsut so cute. I absolutely love it. I’m afraid I’ll lose the key though. It’s not attached to anything at all. The locket is my favorite thing in her set. That is just too perfect.

20150805_213452-2 20150805_213506-2

The next set is a happy birthday set. Not sure who’s birthday it is but it is super cute none the less. The moon is vanilla and in the shape of a moon! There’s a chocolate luna cake topper and a white chocolate artemis cake topper. There’s also a stand for the cake, 2 champagne glasses and rose crown (which I’m assuming is like a birthday tiara, and a bottle of “sparkling juice” which we all know is champagne. On the paper there’s a circle with the planetary symbols on it. I think this is like a mat that goes underneath the cake or you can set up the two glasses and bottle on it. There’s also a happy birthday card. 4/5

Last is Tuxedo Masks. This I think is more like a date night for him and Usagi and not about Tuxedo Mask at all. The only things that’s really his is the star locket. The set comes with a glass with an insertable juice drink and straw, a chocolate ice cream Tuxedo Mask desserts, two crescent moon spoons, a bouquet of roses and the star locket. The paper has two tickets to something and a napkin for the ice cream. Since the juice and straw is removeable its hard to keep it in the glass. I think the tuxedo ice cream is so cute! It even has little TM glasses and a top hat out of chocolate. Oddly enough my favorite things are the crescent moon shaped spoons. It the little attention to detail that gets me. 4/5.

Overall there were some ups and downs and things that could’ve been done better. But I am glad I purchased it. Now I just need a way to display it all. I’m thinking about getting a shadow box to hang on the wall or something!
